Samsung dropping the Galaxy Z Flip 5 like it’s a Drake summer hit

You know how it feels so good when your favorite artist, Drake in my case, drops a summer hit? You're cruising around on balmy summer evenings, blasting the hit over and over again, just having the time of your life? Some hits have the potential of becoming the song of the summer. They come to define the entire season. It could be years down the line and when someone brings up that song again, you instantly get a wave of nostalgia from that year. That's what Drake's 2017 hit Passionfruit does for me.

This isn't 2017 and we're not a music site, so I appreciate you indulging me a bit, but lately I've been getting the same vibes from the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Samsung fans have long been looking forward to the Galaxy Z Flip 5. That's because it's going to bring some major improvements for the clamshell foldable, easily Samsung's most-loved foldable smartphone.

While both the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be unveiled at the Unpacked event confirmed for July 26, Samsung's focus seems to be on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The entire marketing push for the event is based on the clamshell foldable. Samsung's official invite for the event asks you to “Join the flip side,” and the company chose to include a teaser image of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 on it.

All of the marketing materials that we've seen from the company so far for this event are singularly focused on the Galaxy Z Flip 5, to the point where there's no mention of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. That's not to say that Samsung doesn't love the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and wouldn't want you to buy one, it's just that Samsung feels that summer 2023 is going to be all about the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Why shouldn't it be? The clamshell foldable has already been one of Samsung's best-selling devices in this segment. Some reports suggest that previous Galaxy Z Flip models have accounted for as much as 70% of foldable sales. It doesn't hurt that this foldable phone starts at $999, far more attainable than the Galaxy Z Fold models that start at $1,799.

So why is the Galaxy Z Flip 5 looking more like a summer hit with each passing day? If the rumors are anything to go by, it's going to provide customers with incredible value for money. It's rumored to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 12GB of RAM, 256GB storage, and a 4,100mAh battery. The cameras will receive an upgrade as well. It goes without saying that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a bonafide flagship smartphone and will offer the best specs you can find on a clamshell foldable this year.

Perhaps the one change that most customers will love is the larger cover display. We've seen plenty of leaked renders that show exactly what it's going to look like. You'll be able to run entire apps on it, making the phone much more capable even when it's folded shut. Let's not forget that this is an inherently unique device, one that folds in half, and this latest iteration will only make more people confident about picking one up.

Previous iterations of the Galaxy Z Flip already feature water resistance and the upcoming model will, too. Samsung will also make additional durability improvements. By now, it's clear that the Galaxy Z Flip phones can be used as daily drivers without breaking a sweat. I'm still rocking a Galaxy Z Flip 3 from two years ago and it has held up like a champion.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has all the markings of a hit phone. If the amazing customer response that Samsung got with the Galaxy Z Flip 4 last year is any indication, this will likely become one of Samsung's most popular devices of 2023, and it may also entice a lot more people to finally make the move to foldable phones.

One can safely assume that Samsung's marketing push for the new foldables after the June 26 event will also be largely on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Even though the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will bring respectable upgrades of its own, it's the Flip that presents the biggest opportunity, with its much-awaited larger cover display and lower starting price.

That's why Samsung is pulling out all the stops to drop the Galaxy Z Flip 5 like its a summer hit from Drake. The company would want nothing more than for this smartphone to be the only thing that tech fans and customers talk about, and also purchase, until next summer when it hopefully comes back with another banger in the form of the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, though. If you're interested in the new foldables, did you know you can save $50 on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 without even making a deposit?
