The boxy design of Samsung’s Galaxy S Ultra phones is boss

We've been critical on more than one occasion about how the boxy design of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is a detriment to comfortable usage (especially with one hand). The boxy design is a result of the Galaxy S Ultra lineup absorbing the Galaxy Note's best feature, the S Pen stylus, and the Galaxy S Ultra line is now basically a Galaxy Note in all but name.

But is the boxy design as bad as we think it is? Well, compared to the near-perfect dimensions of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, we would say yes. But as I continue to see the Galaxy S23 Ultra more and more in leaks, and having used the Galaxy S22 Ultra for extensive periods last year, I have to say the design of Samsung's Ultra flagships is starting to grow on me.

Sometimes a pain to use, but always a pleasure to see

In fact, I think it's stunning. The Galaxy S22 Ultra looks amazing and feels extremely premium in the hands, and as the leaks have shown, the Galaxy S23 Ultra won't be making any design changes, other than coming in some beautiful new color options.

I still think using the Galaxy S22 Ultra can be a nightmare at times because of that boxy shape (especially since I don't care for the S Pen), and the same will clearly apply to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. But as far as looks are concerned, Samsung's Galaxy S Ultra smartphones are great and have the classiest design of any flagship phone on the market today, Galaxy or otherwise.

It's too bad most of us end up hiding the phone inside a case, which is actually a good idea if you don't want to waste money on getting your phone repaired after it takes a fall and all that glass shatters, but a case does make a phone's looks mostly irrelevant. But if you're someone who doesn't like to use a case, then your Galaxy S Ultra smartphone is likely to turn heads everywhere you go even as it digs into your palms and makes using it one-handed a miserable affair.
