Introduction
The Galaxy A10 and A30 are not very different and share many common features, but Samsung believes there is enough room to slot another model between them. Accordingly, the company has launched the Galaxy A20, borrowing features from both the aforementioned models.
Considering how similar all these models are, it may not make much sense to launch all three of them in any single market. Samsung may, therefore, pick and launch only one or two of these models in each market, like it is doing in Russia where it has skipped the A10.
Design
The Galaxy A20 follows the same design and build quality seen on the A10 and A30, which means it is made out of glossy plastic that Samsung refers to as 3D Glasstic due to its resemblance to the glass. The button and port placement also remain unchanged with a volume rocker and power button on the right, SIM slot on the left, secondary microphone at the top, headphone jack, micro-USB port, primary mic, and a speaker grille on the bottom side.
On the back, there is a vertically arranged dual-camera setup, Samsung branding, and a fingerprint reader. All in all, the Galaxy A20 looks like a replica of the A30 on the outside. It measures 158.4 x 74.7 x 7.8mm and weighs as much as the A30.
Specifications
The Galaxy A20 comes with a 6.4-inch Infinity-V Super AMOLED display, Exynos 7884 octa-core CPU, dual cameras on the back, single selfie shooter camera, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, microSD slot, 4,000mAh battery, and Android 9 Pie with Samsung One UI. It is evident from the specifications that Samsung has borrowed some specs from the A10 and some from the A30 to create the Galaxy A20.
Display
Just like the A30, the A20 comes with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. However, it retains the HD+ resolution of the A10, resulting in a rather unimpressive pixel density of ~268 PPI. It has a v-shaped waterdrop notch for the selfie camera, which Samsung refers to as the Infinity-V design in its marketing materials.
Camera
The camera on the Galaxy A30 is once again a mix of what you find on the A10 and A30. It sports a dual-camera setup on the back and a single selfie camera on the front. For its dual-camera system, it borrows the 13-megapixel f/1.9 primary camera from the A10 and the 5-megapixel f/2.2 secondary camera from the A30. For selfies, it has a single 8-megapixel f/2.0 camera, an upgrade from A10’s 5-megapixel shooter and a downgrade from A30’s 16-megapixel sensor.
Software
Like all other recent Galaxy A devices, the A20 comes with Android 9 Pie and Samsung One UI out of the box. This is an advantage that the new A series enjoys over the M series models which are shipping with Android 8.1 Oreo and Samsung experience UI 9.5. Since the Korean company usually releases a minimum of one major Android update for all its Galaxy devices, it is safe to assume that the A20 will at least receive the Android 10 update at some point in the future.
The software features in the Galaxy A20 are fairly standard and what you would expect from a budget Galaxy device running One UI. It comes with Samsung Pay sans the MST capabilities.
Availability
Samsung made the Galaxy A20 official while launching the Galaxy A30 and A50 in Russia. The company will be offering only a 3GB/32GB variant, priced at 13,990 RUB (~$215). It has since been released in India, Canada and even the United States for the equivalent of $250. Interestingly, Samsung is not launching the Galaxy A10 in Russia, which gives the impression that the company might launch the A20 in place of the former in some markets.
