Introduction

Samsung refreshed the Galaxy A lineup for 2019 with some major changes. The series now reflects the company’s new strategy of packing midrange devices with new features even before they make their debut on flagship models. This makes the new Galaxy A devices exciting and gives them an independent identity, instead of merely being cheaper and weaker versions of the current Galaxy flagships.

Announced at the Mobile World Congress 2019, the Galaxy A50 is the one of the most premium and expensive option of the Galaxy A 2019 models released so far. Placed above the Galaxy A10 and A30, it is a beefed-up version of the Galaxy M30 for the offline market.

Design

The Galaxy A50 is made from a material Samsung is calling Glasstic, which is essentially plastic with some resemblance to glass. The device measures 158.5 x 74.7 x 7.7mm and weighs 166 grams. On the front, we have a display that stretches from edge-to-edge with small bezels and a water-drop notch to house the single selfie camera.

On the back, we have a vertically arranged triple-camera system and LED flash at the top-right corner and Samsung branding in the middle. The power and volume buttons are on the right side, leaving the left side of the device blemishless. The bottom side of the phone houses a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a speaker grille. The SIM tray with a dedicated microSD card slot can be found on the top side of the phone.

Specifications

The Galaxy A50 sports a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, an optical in-display fingerprint reader (first-ever on a Galaxy midranger), Exynos 9610 octa-core 10nm chipset, Mali-G72 MP3, triple cameras on the back, 4/6GB of RAM, 64GB internal storage, a 4,000mAh battery with support for fast charging, and Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top.

You can find the entire list of specifications on our Galaxy A50 specifications page.

Display

The Galaxy A50 comes with a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display (Samsung’s marketing term for water-drop notch) with an in-built optical fingerprint reader and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It results in a Screen-to-body ratio of 91.6 %. It sports a resolution of 1080 x 2340 (FHD+) pixels, giving it a pixel density of 402 PPI.

Camera

Camera is one of the major selling points for the Galaxy A50. Hardware wise, the A50 features a triple camera setup on the back and a single shooter for selfies on the front. The triple-camera system consists of a 25-megapixel sensor primary camera with f/1.7 aperture, an 8-megapixel 123-degree FOV (Field of View) wide-angle sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor for bokeh effects. The selfie camera is a 25-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture.

Software

Unlike the new Galaxy M series, the Galaxy A 2019 lineup comes with Android Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top out of the box. The company also keeps pushing regular security updates and bugfixes to these models. Given that the next Android version is at least a few months away and will take even longer to arrive for Samsung devices, the A50 won’t feel outdated for a long time. In terms of software features, the device doesn’t bring anything new to the table. You can read our coverage of Android Pie and Samsung’s One UI to get an idea about the software onboard.

Availability

Samsung announced the Galaxy A50 at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona last month. A few days later, it went on sale in India. It is available in white, blue, and black color options for INR 19,990 (~$280) for the 4GB/64GB variant and INR 22,990 (~$325) for the 6GB/64GB variant. It is expected to go on sale in Europe in mid-march for around €349. Pricing and available variants may vary depending on the region.
