Galaxy A54 vs Galaxy M54: These are more different than you think

Introduction

Samsung continued to release Galaxy A and Galaxy M mid-range phones in 2023 and pushed forward both lineups. The company released the Galaxy M54 5G as sort of an alternative to the Galaxy A54 5G in select markets.

As usual, the M-branded phone puts more focus on raw hardware specifications and less on build quality and camera software, and processing capabilities. It's a trade-off Samsung makes for customers in some markets, who may be looking for more raw power at a lower price rather than optimized features.

Design

The Galaxy M54 5G borrows the no-contour camera design from other Samsung phones released in 2023, but it is not as modern-looking as other devices from the Galaxy A series. The back panel is not completely flat, and the plastic frame is narrower and rounder.

Likewise, the glass on top of the display has chamfered edges and a thicker lower bezel. The Galaxy M54 5G lacks dust and water resistance, and although it benefits from Gorilla Glass 5 display protection, it has a plastic back panel.

The phone measures 164.9 x 77.3 x 8.4mm and weighs 199 grams. It was announced in two color options: Dark Blue and Silver.

Specifications

The Galaxy M54 5G features the Exynos 1380 chip, which Samsung manufactured on a 5nm process. The chip includes four Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.4GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores operating at 2.0GHz, and one Mali-G68 MP5 graphics chip.

Memory options for the Galaxy M54 include 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. The storage is expandable via microSD. The phone doesn't have a 3.5mm audio port. It features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner rather than hiding it under the display.

Samsung Galaxy M54 Battery Capacity

In terms of connectivity, the Galaxy M54 5G uses Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6, Bluetooth 5.3, and USB Type-C. The phone is powered by a 6,000mAh battery with 25W charging capabilities.

Display

With a Super AMOLED Plus display that has a 6.7-inch diagonal, the Galaxy M54 5G is on the large side. A few years before it got released, the M54 would've been called a “phablet” because of its size. In 2023, it's simply a smartphone equipped with e generous display.

The Super AMOLED Plus panel has a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz and a resolution of 2400 x 1080. It has an Infinity-O cutout for the selfie camera.

Camera

Speaking of cameras, the primary sensor is one of the phone's highlights. The Galaxy M54 5G sports a high-resolution sensor with optical image stabilization. The wide-angle camera has a whopping 108 megapixels.

The other two cameras found on the phone's back panel are an 8MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro camera. Meanwhile, the selfie sensor has a resolution of 32MP. Both the rear and front-facing cameras support 4K@30fps video recording.

Software and features

Samsung shipped the Galaxy M54 5G with Android 13 and One UI 5.1. However, because it's an M-series device, the phone might not take advantage of the best firmware support Samsung can offer and may not receive four major OS upgrades.

Likewise, because it's a mid-range M-branded phone, the Galaxy M54 5G doesn't support the Samsung DeX environment. It is strictly a mid-range phone that runs One UI 5.1 at launch.

Availability and price

Samsung revealed the Galaxy M54 5G without much fanfare and pricing details in mid-March 2023. After the official announcement, the phone debuted in Brazil at the beginning of April. It was released for the equivalent of $591.

However, prices in Brazil are higher compared to most other markets. Generally, the Galaxy M54 5G costs slightly more than the Galaxy A34 5G, the latter of which debuted in Europe for €390.
