Introduction
The Galaxy A10e is one of Samsung's most affordable phones to have been released in the USA in 2019. Despite – or perhaps thanks to – its price range, the Galaxy A10e was also Samsung's best-selling phone in the USA in Q1 2020.
Samsung's 2019 budget device proves that the recipe for success isn't always to aim for the stars. Spec-wise, the Galaxy A10e may be a thoroughly-compromised smartphone compared to a Samsung flagship, but its low price makes up for it and contributes to its success on the market. Even as a low-end performer, it still is essentially a smartphone capable of giving you access to some of the most popular mobile apps and services on a budget.
Design
The Galaxy A10e has a modest exterior design, especially when compared to Samsung's more expensive smartphones. It has relatively thin top and size bezels resting on top of a thicker lower ‘chin,' and the back panel accommodates only a single camera next to an LED flash. Save for the Galaxy J2 Core (2020) which is actually a re-release of an older phone, the Galaxy A10e was Samsung's last smartphone to be equipped with a single rear-facing camera.
The phone has a unibody design instead of a metal frame or a glass sandwich construction. It's bereft of a fingerprint scanner but it has a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C port at the bottom. The physical buttons reside on the right edge of the phone, and a SIM/microSD card tray sits on the opposite side. The Galaxy A10e measures 147.3 x 69.6 x 8.4mm, it weighs 141 grams, and it was released only in the color black.
Specifications
Samsung's 2019 budget phone features an Exynos 7884 chipset that was built using a 14nm process. The SoC has two high-performance ARM Cortex-A73 CPU cores clocked at 1.6GHz and six energy-efficient Cortex-A53 cores operating at a frequency of 1.35GHz.
The CPU is paired with a Mali-G71 MP2 dual-core graphics chip, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of built-in eMMC 5.1 storage expandable via microSD by up to 512GB. The phone supports Bluetooth 5.0 LE, 802.11 b/g/n/ac 2.4G+5GHz, VHT80, GPS, and is powered by a 3,000mAh battery rated by Samsung for up to 15 hours of Internet usage time on a single charge.
Display
Equipped with a 5.8-inch display, the Galaxy A10e was one of Samsung's more compact smartphones of 2019.
The 5.8-inch panel is of the PLS TFT LCD variety and it follows an Infinity-V notch design. It has a resolution of 1560 by 720 pixels.
Camera
As expected from a low-end budget phone, the Galaxy A10e's camera setup is nothing to write home about. It exists as the bare minimum for mobile photography in this day and age. That's especially true since, once again, the Galaxy A10e was Samsung's last smartphone to feature a single main camera on the back panel.
It's equipped with an 8MP main sensor that has an f/1.9 aperture and video recording capabilities of 1920 by 1080 at 30 frames per second. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels and an f/2.0 aperture.
Software and Features
The Galaxy A10e shipped with Android 9 but it was later updated to Android 10 and One UI Core 2. The update added new full-screen gestures, animations, icons and colors, Dark Mode, and improved existing features like Digital Wellbeing, Device Care, Calendar, Reminders, My Files, and more.
One UI Core 2 is a more minimal version of the full-fledged user experience, so the Galaxy A10e is lacking features such as DeX and Samsung Pay, but it is compatible with a variety of Galaxy and Gear wearables.
Availability
Samsung introduced the Galaxy A10e in the summer of 2019 and it was released in the USA via AT&T in July for the price of $209 off-contract or for $7 a month on an installment plan.
The Galaxy A10e was also released in South Korea, while in Japan it was rebranded as the Galaxy A20. Nearly a full year after its debut, the Galaxy A10e is available in the USA unlocked for the price of $179.99, but occasional limited-time discounts have brought the phone's price all the way down to $129.99.
