Introduction
The Samsung Galaxy A33 is one of Samsung's most affordable phones of 2022, but it certainly appears to challenge the definition of a budget device.
Although it's still a low-to-mid-range phone, the Galaxy A33 has several upgrades that customers would normally expect from pricier phones. The list of upgrades includes but isn't limited to a water-resistant build, Super-Fast Charging, and the same chipset found inside the Galaxy A53.
Certain features were lost, however. So even though the Galaxy A33 can be a great upgrade for Galaxy A31 customers, it's ‘only' nearly perfect.
Design
Samsung's mid-range phones look more and more alike, which is a great thing as the lower-cost models strive for a better build rather than the higher-end models going the other way around.
The Galaxy A33 has the same design language as the Galaxy A53 and A73, complete with a similar-looking camera hump.
More importantly, the Galaxy A33 brings back water-resistance to the A3x series, and it's the first to do so since 2017. The phone has an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, allowing it to survive quick dips in up to 1 meter of freshwater.
The Galaxy A33 measures 159.7 x 74.0 x 8.1mm and weighs 186 grams.
Specifications
Surprisingly enough, the Soc is another area where the Galaxy A33 shares commonalities with pricier phones. The A33 is powered by the same Exynos chipset as the Galaxy A53. Aside from solid performance, it enables new and advanced camera features powered by AI.
Samsung offers the Galaxy A33 with 6/8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of built-in storage. The phone has a microSD card slot and supports up to 1TB of external memory.
Yet another characteristic shared with the pricier Galaxy A53 and A73 is the battery configuration. The new Galaxy A33 is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 25W Super-Fast Charging, however, the wall charger is sold separately.
One feature that was lost and worth mentioning is the 3.5mm standard. The Galaxy A33 no longer features a 3.5mm port, meaning that customers will have to connect audio equipment wirelessly, via USB-C, or by using a 3.5mm dongle.
Display
The Galaxy A3x series display size and design haven't changed for the past couple of years. Nevertheless, the Galaxy A33 does bring one important upgrade, namely a high-refresh-rate display.
The Galaxy A33 uses a 90Hz FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U panel. It's not as fast as the A53's 120Hz display, but it can render frames faster than the previous 60Hz screens.
Samsung's new mid-range phone can essentially render 90 frames per second, in areas where this is permitted, such as the UI and select mobile games that support high-refresh-rate displays. This leads to smoother animations and a perceived increase in touch responsiveness.
Camera
Future Galaxy A33 customers and mobile photography enthusiasts will work with a quad-camera setup.
The four-camera combo comprises a 48MP (f/1.8) main sensor with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), an 8MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide shooter, a 5MP (f/2.4) macro sensor, and a 2MP (f/2.4) depth camera.
The selfie camera embedded in the Infinity-U display cutout has a resolution of 13MP and an f/2.2 aperture.
Software and features
One of the best characteristics of the Galaxy A33 is the incredible firmware support it will enjoy.
The phone runs Android 12 (One UI 4.1), and although some flagship-grade software features haven't made the cut, the UI is modern and offers plenty of personalization options.
More importantly, Samsung guarantees that the Galaxy A33 will receive four major Android OS (One UI) throughout its lifetime and benefit from up to five years of security patches.
Availability and price
The Galaxy A33 was officially announced at a virtual event on March 17, 2022. Along with the phone, Samsung confirmed an April 22 launch. The starting price for the UK market was set at GBP 329.
