Introduction
While the Galaxy A51 got a launch event, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A71 rather quietly. It's among the first 2020 Galaxy A handsets to be unveiled in December 2019. This handset follows the Galaxy A70 which was best described as a beefier version of the Galaxy A50.
The Galaxy A71 sticks to the same script. It shares many of its features with the Galaxy A50, with only a few differentiating factors. They're enough to give the device its own identity so it doesn't have to be viewed through the Galaxy A51's prism.
Design
Samsung has kept the same glossy plastic build for the Galaxy A71 that we saw on its predecessor. It calls this material 3D Glasstic. The biggest noticeable difference on the front is the Infinity-O display instead of the Infinity-U notch. This allows for slimmer bezels all around.
All of the physical buttons are placed on the right side of the frame. The USB Type-C port, primary mic and speaker and the headphone jack are all at the bottom. There's a new L-shaped camera module at the back that's vertically aligned. The Galaxy A71 measures 164.6 x 76.0 x 7.7 mm and weighs 179g.
Specifications
There's a dual 2.2 GHz + hexa 1.8GHz octa-core processor powering the Galaxy A71, it's likely the Snapdragon 730. There's 128GB of internal storage on both the 6GB and 8GB RAM variants. MicroSD expansion is supported up to 512GB. A 4,500mAh battery is keeping the lights on with support for 25W fast charging.
Display
The Galaxy A71 sports a 6.7-inch Full HD+ (1080×2400) Super AMOLED Infinity-O display. The panel has a centered punch hole for the front camera, a design element that's trickling down to the premium mid-range series from the Galaxy Note 10.
Samsung also equips many of its premium mid-range devices with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy A71 is no different as it features an optical in-display fingerprint sensor much like its predecessor.
Camera
There's a 64-megapixel f/1.8 primary camera on the Galaxy A71 in addition to a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide and 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth camera. The Galaxy A71 also features a 5-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera. A 32-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera is onboard as well.
Software
As one would expect from the 2020 Galaxy A series handsets, the Galaxy A71 does indeed come with Android 10 pre-installed. This means that users will get all One UI 2.0 features from the very first day. We have explained more about One UI 2.0 in our dedicated feature focus series.
Price and availability
The Galaxy A71 is offered in Prism Crush Black, Silver, Blue and Pink colors. It's going to be offered in different markets across the globe. We are also aware that it's headed to Europe for 400 euro. Samsung may also release a 5G variant of the device in China.
