Introduction
Samsung's partnership with Indian online retailer Flipkart has led to the release of a few new Galaxy F-branded phones in the first half of 2021. In April, the company expanded the lineup with the launch of another F-branded phone inspired by the Galaxy M series, called the Galaxy F02s.
Like other Galaxy F models before it, the Galaxy F02s isn't a brand-new design but a carbon copy of an existing Galaxy M smartphone, namely the Galaxy M02s. The Galaxy F02s has the same hardware components as its M-branded sibling, but it was released in a new range of color options.
Design
The Galaxy F02s looks very much like a budget phone from 2020, even though it was released in 2021. The oversized rectangular camera housing gives the illusion of a triple-camera setup that's more capable than it actually is, and the plastic back panel has a two-tone color scheme.
At the front, the Galaxy F02s comes with an Infinity-V display design. The panel is flat and has a thick lower chin. A USB-C port, the loudspeaker, and a 3.5mm port are found on the lower edge of the phone.
The Galaxy F02s measures 164.2 x 75.9 x 9.1mm and weighs 196 grams. It was made available in three haze & matte two-tone color options called Ceramic Black, Ceramic Blue, and Ceramic White.
Display
This budget phone is equipped with a PLS TFT LCD rather than using Samsung's Super AMOLED technology. The panel has a 6.5-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1600 by 720 pixels. It has a fixed 60Hz refresh rate.
Specifications
With the launch of the Galaxy F02s, Samsung opted for a chipset developed by Qualcomm rather than using an Exynos solution. The phone is equipped with the Snapdragon 450 SoC as a result. The Snapdragon 450 features a single octa-core cluster comprising eight ARM Cortex A53 CPU cores clocked at 1.8GHz, and an Adreno 506 graphics chip.
Prospective buyers were offered two memory options from which to choose, namely 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB. The device has dual-SIM capabilities, and storage is expandable through a dedicated microSD card slot.
The device offers 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz) connectivity, and it's equipped with USB-C and a 3.5mm audio port. It's also compatible with GPS, Glonass, Beidou, and Galileo. The phone lacks NFC, and it's powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 15W charging.
Camera
The triple-camera setup is made up of a 13MP main sensor with autofocus and an f/2.2 aperture, a 2MP (f/2.4) sensor for macro photography, and a 2MP depth (f/2.4) shooter. The rear camera is capable of up to 8x digital zoom, and it's accompanied by an LED flash but lacks OIS. It can record FHD (1920 x 1080) videos at 30fps.
The selfie camera has a resolution of 5MP and an f/2.2 aperture. It, too, misses out on autofocus and OIS, as expected from the budget segment in 2021.
Software
Less expected was the older version of Android that accompanied the Galaxy F02s at launch. The phone ships with Android 10 and One UI 2, which is usually an indicator that the device might not enjoy timely Android OS updates throughout its lifetime.
The software experience is limited compared to pricier Galaxy phones, and features such as Samsung DeX and Samsung TV Plus for mobile are missing.
Price and Availability
The Galaxy F02s was created for India, where it debuted on April 9, 2021, through Samsung's online store and other retailers — Flipkart included.
The 3GB/32GB model debuted for INR 8,999 ($122), and the 4GB/64GB variant went on sale for INR 9,999 ($137).
