Android 13 One UI 5.0 update rolling out to the Galaxy M12

Introduction

Before the Galaxy M12 (and its Galaxy F12 sibling) went official, the Galaxy A32 was the company's least expensive device to carry a high refresh rate display. But surprisingly enough, the Galaxy M12 was introduced with a 90Hz display despite its low-cost position in the market, and the high refresh rate panel works surprisingly well.

Needless to say, the Galaxy M12 is one of Samsung's most intriguing budget-oriented phones in recent times because it seemingly punches above its weight in a few key areas.

Design

The Galaxy M12 looks very much like the Galaxy F12, as well as the Galaxy A12, for that matter. It has an Infinity-V display design with a fairly prominent ‘chin,' and it carries a square-shaped quad-camera combo on the back panel.

The phone carries its physical buttons on the right edge and it has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The back panel wraps around the edges of the device in a unibody style and it comes in one of three color options: black, blue, and green. The phone measures 164.0 x 75.9 x 9.7mm and weighs 221 grams.

Specifications

At the heart of the Galaxy M12 beats the Exynos 850 octa-core chipset paired with 4GB of RAM. The phone has 64GB of built-in storage and a 1TB microSD card slot.

Other noteworthy specs include dual-SIM capabilities, a USB Type-C port, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The components are powered by a 5,000mAh or a 6,000mAh battery with 15W charging, depending on the market. In countries like India, the phone has a 6,000mAh battery, while in the UK the phone was announced with a 5,000mAh battery in tow.

Display

The Galaxy M12's display must be its most surprising characteristic. On the face of it, it's just a cost-effective IPS 6.5-inch panel with a resolution of 1600 by 720 and a rather outdated Infinity-V notch.

On close inspection, however, the Galaxy M12's display is far from conventional. Unlike other Infinity-V displays which are locked at a 60Hz refresh rate, the M12's display boasts 90Hz capabilities. Better yet, the 90Hz panel isn't a gimmick and it actually performs surprisingly well in this configuration, leading to smoother animations.

Camera

The square-shaped camera housing found on the back of the Galaxy M12 accommodates a total of four sensors, with the LED flash residing on the outside of the housing.

The quad-camera setup includes a 48MP main sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and PDAF, an 5MP ultra-wide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, a 2MP depth camera, and a 2MP macro shooter, both of which have an f/2.4 aperture. The front-facing camera clocks in at a resolution of 8MP.

Software

Samsung is shipping the Galaxy M12 with the Core version of One UI 3.1, based on Android 11. As a Core version of the UI, it's missing some features, but the UI looks modernized and up to par with other devices released in 2021.

Since it was released with Android 11, the Galaxy M12 should technically offer support for major Android OS updates up until Android 13.

Availability and Price

The Galaxy M12 was first released in Vietnam at the beginning of 2021 but the phone was later made available in a variety of countries across different continents.

Regardless of where you might buy it from, the Galaxy M12 costs under 200 EUR and it ships with a user manual, an ejector pin, a 15W charger and a data cable.
