Introduction
The Galaxy M55 is the sequel to the Galaxy M54, and like other phones in the series, an affordable alternative to Samsung's more premium Galaxy A mid-range phones. The M55 launched soon after the Galaxy A55 and comes with a more humble spec sheet for the most part.
Design
The Galaxy M55 has a standard design that Samsung fans will be familiar with. Its front side is taken up by the Infinity-O display, while the back has three camera sensors arranged vertically.
The device has a plastic frame and back panel and is sleek and light weight thanks to a width of 7.8mm and weight of 180 grams. The full dimensions of the M55 are 163.9 x 76.5 x 7.8. It launched with the Light Green and Denim Black color options.
Display
The Galaxy M55 has a 6.7-inch display that uses a Super AMOLED Plus panel. The display has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and runs at a refresh rate of 120Hz. Samsung touts 1000 nits of maximum brightness, but the brightness may be slightly higher in practice when high brightness mode is active in harsh outdoor lighting conditions.
Like its predecessor, the Galaxy M55 has an Infinity-O cutout for the front-facing camera. The bezels have been reduced, according to Samsung, though they remain larger than the bezels on the company's modern flagship smartphones.
Specifications
The Galaxy M55 is Samsung's first phone powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 has a single Cortex-A710 core clocked at 2.4GHz, three Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.36GHz, and four Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, along with the Adreno 644 GPU.
The M55 is also Samsung's first mid-range phone to support 45W super fast charging. Its battery capacity is 5,000 mAh, 1,000 mAh less than 2023's M54. In the M series, the M55 is the first to come with 12GB of RAM. The memory configurations include 8GB+128GB, 8GB+256GB, and 12GB+256GB, with the option for storage expansion using a microSD card.
Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax 2.4GHz+5GHz, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, 5G, and GPS (GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo, and QZSS). It sports a USB Type-C port for data transfer and charging. The USB-C port is also used for wired headphones and audio devices as there is no 3.5mm port on the M55.
Camera
The Galaxy M55's camera specs are both an upgrade and a downgrade compared to the Galaxy M54, at least as far as numbers are concerned. It has a 50MP primary rear camera instead of a 108MP camera, with the camera sporting an aperture of F1.8 and optical image stabilization.
At the front, the M55 boasts a 50MP selfie camera, a first for any Samsung Galaxy smartphone. The rest of the camera setup includes an 8MP F2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 2MP F2.4 macro camera. The M55 can record 4K videos at 30 fps.
Software and features
The Galaxy M55 shipped with Android 14 and One UI 6.1 and is promised four major Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. While it runs One UI 6.1 out of the box, it does not support any Galaxy AI features. It also lacks flagship software features such as DeX.
Availability and price
Like the Galaxy M54, the Galaxy M55 made its debut in Brazil, where it was announced in late March 2024. The phone later arrived in India in the second week of April with a starting price of around $330.
