Introduction
Like every Galaxy S flagship lineup launched since 2020, the Galaxy S24 have a Plus model in the middle that offers much of the same specs as the base model but with a screen size and battery capacity closer to that of the Ultra model.
In 2024, that's truer than ever, thanks to a significant display upgrade the Galaxy S24+ enjoys. But as usual, the Plus variant is the best option for phone users who don't care about the S Pen and would rather not pay more for the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Design
While the Galaxy S24+ look similar to the Galaxy S23+ at first glance, the 2024 model sports a flat frame rather than a slightly curved one.
The display and back panels are also flat, and the rear cameras are laid out vertically.
IP68 certification for water and dust resistance is a given, but one Ultra feature the Galaxy S24+ misses out on is a titanium frame. The Galaxy S24+ measures 158.5 x 75.9 x 7.7mm and weighs 197 grams.
Samsung released the 2024 Plus model in four standard colors, and for the first time, it employs three additional online-exclusive shades. The standard colors are Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow. Online-only colors include Jade Green, Sandstone Orange, and Sapphire Blue.
Specifications
Samsung is bringing back its Exynos chips with the Galaxy S24 series, and the S24+ is powered by the Exynos 2400 in most countries. Some countries, like the US, Canada, Japan, and China, get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Each of these chipsets have 1.6x larger vapor chambers for better cooling, contributing to higher performance in demanding tasks, such as next-gen mobile games.
The S24+ boasts 12GB of RAM as standard, which is a notable improvement from the 8GB of RAM that was available on all Galaxy S23+ variants.
Furthermore, the phone has a larger 4,900 mAh battery capacity, 200 mAh more than the Galaxy S23+. Charging speeds top out at 45W.
The Galaxy S24+ has all the modern connectivity features, including NFC, 5G, and UWB (ultra-wideband). Dual SIM slots are also available in most markets, in addition to an eSIM. However, Wi-Fi 7 was left out of the Galaxy S24 and S24+ because the Exynos 2400 chip doesn't support this standard.
Display
The Galaxy S24+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display is vastly upgraded, as it now has a higher brightness and more pixels. The panel can top 2,600 nits of brightness, and for the first time in the history of the Plus models, the Galaxy S24+ adopts QHD resolution, matching the Ultra variants.
More so, because the Galaxy S24+ has a 6.7-inch display, which is 0.1-inch smaller than the Ultra's, it has a higher pixel density.
The panel also takes advantage of improved Vision Booster technology, and now, its adaptive refresh rate can go as low as 1Hz and as high as 120Hz. The S24's predecessor is limited to 48-120Hz.
The phone also boasts new Always On Display capabilities. Users can now set wallpapers to the AOD, and the latter is deeply interconnected with the lock screen. Now, lock screen widgets are shared with the AOD.
Camera
The Galaxy S24+ camera system borrows a lot of hardware from the Galaxy S23+ and consists of a 50MP primary camera, a 10MP 3x optical telephoto camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP selfie camera.
Nevertheless, photo and video quality was improved thanks to the new powerful AI capabilities of the new Exynos and Snapdragon chips and ProVisual Engine. For one, the phone can now Dual Record with two rear-facing cameras simultaneously.
The Gallery experience is also powered by new AI tricks, including Generative Edit, Super HDR previews, Instant Slow-mo playback, and clever editing suggestions.
Software and Features
The Galaxy S24 series comes with Android 14 and version 6.1 of Samsung One UI out of the box. A lot of the new software features are built around Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models as part of Samsung's Galaxy AI experience.
Other notable One UI 6.1 and AI features are:
- Chat Assist.
- Live Translation for phone calls.
- Interpreter.
- Circle to Search.
- Adaptive Color Tone.
- Transcriptions for Voice Recorder app.
- Auto Summary for many Samsung apps.
- Generative Wallpapers.
One UI 6.1 is peppered with many other new and improved features. The cherry on top is that Samsung will support the Galaxy S24+ with seven OS upgrades and seven years of security patches.
