Introduction
Samsung decided to double down on the Galaxy S6 edge when it saw that customers had given a favorable response to its first smartphone with a dual-edge curved display. So Samsung stuck with the same formula and just gave the device a larger display.
That's really what the Galaxy S6 edge+ is, it's a bigger variant of the Galaxy S6 edge that happens to have a larger display and a bigger battery. It retains everything that made customers love the Galaxy S6 edge and makes a couple of key improvements that would entice even more customers to opt for this device.
Design
Back when the Galaxy S6 edge arrived, it was the most beautiful Android smartphone on the market. People loved it because of its metal and glass unibody construction and its premium look and feel. Samsung just expanded on that for the Galaxy S6 edge+, it retained everything that made the Galaxy S6 edge great and simply super-sized it for this device.
The device's front is dominated by its large dual-edge curved display. There's a physical home button with an embedded fingerprint sensor accompanied by the back and recent apps key on both sides. You'll find a micro-USB port at the bottom with a microphone and 3.5mm headphone jack. Like the Galaxy S6 edge, this handset also didn't have an IP rating for water and dust resistance. The Galaxy S6 edge+ measures 154.4 x 75.8 x 6.9 and weighs 153g.
Specifications
Samsung did use the same 2.1GHz Exynos 7420 processor for the Galaxy S6 edge+ but gave it 4GB of RAM instead of the 3GB found on the Galaxy S6 edge. The chipset featured an integrated Cat 9 LTE modem for faster downloads on mobile networks. It was available with 32GB and 64GB of internal storage with no microSD card slot for external expansion.
It came with a wide variety of sensors which include an accelerometer, barometer, fingerprint sensor, gyro, hall, HR and proximity sensor. A 3000mAh battery was onboard to keep the lights on, non-removable of course, with support for wireless charging.
Display
The display was the biggest selling point of the Galaxy S6 edge+, Samsung equipped it with a 5.7-inch Quad HD+ (2560×1440) pixel resolution Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display. As always, Samsung's AMOLED panel won praise for its excellent viewing angles and brightness.
Camera
Samsung didn't make any changes to the camera setup for this device so it kept the 16-megapixel f/1.9 rear camera with an LED flash, autofocus and Optical Image Stabilization and 5-megapixel f/1.9 front camera that was introduced with the Galaxy S6 edge. The camera setup had already proven to be quite good on those devices so there was no reason to upgrade them on this mid-cycle refresh of the Galaxy S6 edge.
Software
The Galaxy S6 edge+ came with Android 5.1.1 out of the box with the same iteration of the TouchWiz UI that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. Samsung did make a couple of tweaks to the interface, though, but they were minor in nature.
Price and Availability
The Galaxy S6 edge+ was released worldwide in August 2015. It was sold in Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, White Pearl and Silver Titanium colors. Prices for the unlocked variant started at $750.
