Introduction
Samsung's Galaxy Watch 6 series consists of a standard flat model with a virtual bezel and a Classic variant with a physical rotating ring around the display.
The main topic of this page, i.e., the standard Galaxy Watch 6, is a direct sequel to the Galaxy Watch 5 from 2022, and it looks almost the same as its predecessor. However, some characteristics have changed, both in terms of looks and hardware.
Design
The Galaxy Watch 6 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes. However, next to the Watch 5, the 2023 model has thinner display bezels and more screen real estate.
The 40mm Galaxy Watch 6 is equipped with a 1.3-inch screen that has a resolution of 432 x 432 pixels. The 44mm model has a larger 1.5-inch circular display with a resolution of 480 x 480.
Thanks to its thinner bezel and slightly bigger screen, the Galaxy Watch 6 looks modernized and different enough from the Watch 5 model to justify its sequel status.
Samsung's 2023 smartwatch has an aluminum frame, sapphire crystal display protection, and a MIL-STD-810H-compliant construction. It's IP68-certified for dust and water resistance. Color options include Graphite, Gold, and Silver, and regardless of size options, the Watch 6 is as thin as 9mm.
Specifications
The 40 and 44mm Galaxy Watch 6 models are powered by 300mAh and 425mAh batteries, respectively. Samsung says they should offer up to 30 hours of autonomy on a single charge with the AOD (Always-On Display) turned off.
The smartwatch has 10W wireless charging capabilities, Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, and optional LTE.
Samsung has equipped the 2023 smartwatch models with a new Exynos W930 chip boasting a higher clock rates than the W920. The dual-core CPU runs at 1.4GHz instead of 1.18GHz. Furthermore, the Galaxy Watch 6 has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage.
The Galaxy Watch 6 has the same powerful BioActive 3-in-1 health-monitoring sensor as the Galaxy Watch 5, which incorporates electrical heart signal, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and optical heart rate sensors. In addition, the Watch 6 has a temperature sensor, a barometer, an accelerometer, a gyro sensor, a light sensor, and a geomagnetic sensor.
Software and Features
The Galaxy Watch 6 series ships with Wear OS 4.0 and One UI Watch 5. The new software brings on-device Sleep Coaching and sleep tracking, which should help users get a better understanding of their sleep patterns, improved SOS call and fall detection, and personalized heart rate zones for fitness activities.
The personalized heart rate zones are determined by the user's fitness levels and allow Samsung Health to offer a much better training program based on the user's fitness level and heart rate.
Samsung's 2023 smartwatch also brought more controls for the Camera Controller app and even introduced a new Thermo Check app that uses the smartwatch's temperature sensor to determine how hot or cold objects are. A new temperature API allows developers to use the sensor for more diverse applications.
Price and Availability
Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch 6 on July 26 at Unpacked in Seoul. The smartwatch became available for pre-order on the same day, and Samsung scheduled it to hit the market on August 11.
The 40mm Wi-Fi-only / LTE variants were announced for $299 / $349. The 44mm Wi-Fi / LTE Galaxy Watch 6 was priced at $329 / $379.
