Introduction

Samsung One UI 1.0 was the most substantial makeover the company's proprietary user interface received in the last couple of years. One UI 1.0, introduced with Android Pie, brought plenty of useful new features to Galaxy devices. One UI also makes day-to-day use more intuitive and convenient by putting the necessary information inside menus and first-party apps at the forefront. Actionable elements, such as the button to start writing a new message in the SMS app, are shifted to the bottom of the screen for easier reach in one-handed use.

With the Galaxy S10, Samsung introduced the first update to One UI, version 1.1. One UI 1.1 was a minor update, as the version number tells you, but it did bring a couple of excellent new features.

One UI 1.1 features

The most useful feature One UI 1.1 introduced was Bixby Routines. Bixby Routines lets the user automate certain tasks on their phones through a simple if-this-then-that interface. Want your phone to automatically start playing music the moment it connects to the Bluetooth stereo in your car? Need the day's weather info read out to you as soon as your alarm wakes you up? Want your phone's Wi-Fi to be switched off when you leave home?

Bixby Routines makes all that possible and more and is mostly limited by your imagination. Another Bixby-related functionality introduced with One UI 1.1 is the ability to fire up Bixby Voice using the power button. This is for devices that don't have a dedicated Bixby key, which is pretty much every Galaxy phone and tablet launched after the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+.

With One UI 1.1, Google's Digital Wellbeing feature also started making its way to Galaxy devices. Digital Wellbeing is the search giant's answer to the smartphone addition that permeates society today. It lets you set limits to how much you can use a specific app each day, and as you near bedtime, Digital Wellbeing starts blocking notifications and turns the screen to black and white.

One UI 1.1 release

One UI 1.1 was never released for existing devices as a software update. It was only preloaded on new devices, such as the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy A50, and was succeeded by One UI 1.5 on the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+.
